Best Fly Fishing in Belize - The Grand Slam and More

Permit fishIf you are hoping to catch your first bonefish or achieve fly fishing's greatest challenge, The Grand Slam, The Inn at Robert's Grove is the best place to start and finish your next fishing and family vacation.

Southern Belize is blessed with a wide range of fishing contexts including extensive saltwater flats, mangrove islands, the largest Barrier Reef in the Western Hemisphere, and a plenitude of backcountry rivers, lagoons, and freshwater lakes. There is nowhere in the Caribbean that offers a greater variety of fishing locations than southern Belize.

Man Tackling Fish

Southern Belize, like very few other fishing locations in the Caribbean, is teeming with a wide variety of sportfishing species.

  • Bonefish cruise the reef and flats among the outer cayes.
  • Tarpon patrol inner mangrove islands, the rivers, lagoons, and can be found in very isolated, rarely visited landlocked freshwater lakes.
  • Permit, southern Belize's true world-class sportfish, can be found tailing on the coral flats, off mangrove islands, and in the extensive backcountry system known as Punta Ycacos Lagoon.

In addition to these big three species, southern Belize has fantastic fishing for snook, jack, barracuda, bonito, mutton snapper, and untouched offshore fishing for tuna, cobia, dorado, and even sailfish.

Tarpon Fishing in Belize

The primary sport fish that live on the flats - bonefish, permit and tarpon - around The Inn are built for speed and endurance. Make sure your reels have at least 200 yards of backing. If you've never caught a bonefish before - and they're plentiful around here - imagine hooking a world-class sprinter by the back of the shorts. Placencia is rightfully called "the permit capital of the world," and permit and tarpon can test your tackle (and your nerves!) to their limits.

Another absolute must: polarized sunglasses in either a copper or amber tint. Your guide will be able to spot fish, but it helps him - and your chances of success - if you can see them, too.
